“Sustainable” Is Synonymous to “Eco-Friendly”: Student Perceptions about Sustainability and Sustainable Behavior

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a designated goal of the UN and by now an integral part modern curricula. ESD programs grounded in student perceptions are considered ideal starting point effective learning progress. Although various studies about conceptions contexts exist, little data available younger age groups. This cross-sectional study supposed to extend insight into adolescent on sustainability sustainable behavior providing systematic analysis students’ (N = 139, 10.2 ± 0.28) perceptions. A suitable category system needed establishment first. On that basis substantial knowledge gaps regarding three pillars were identified: economic social aspects rarely addressed. Most students had encountered term “sustainable” media The dominant was “examples behavior”. terms eco-friendly appear be used synonymously students. Based conceptual preferences, implications further research concepts student-centered teaching provided.
